With I&E now entering our second decade, our charge has become a more focused version of our original imperative to raise Duke’s profile as an innovative university: to expand the reach of our educational programs, further embedding innovation and entrepreneurship in students’ regular courses of study.
Duke students are among the brightest thinkers and doers of tomorrow, poised to solve the complex environmental, health, and social challenges facing the world. To do this, they will need to be bold in the face of uncertainty. They will need to become skilled and thoughtful agents of change, able to overcome obstacles with courage and resilience. They will need to innovate.
Entrepreneurial action is for everyone—not just those who want to start a company or invent a product. With education in innovation and entrepreneurship, students become better critical observers. They become more creative, able to generate novel solutions to difficult problems. They become more disciplined, more resourceful, and more inclined to take action. They become more likely and better able to affect meaningful change.
We believe every Duke student can benefit from cultivating an entrepreneurial mindset and learning skills to realize their ideas. Interdisciplinary entrepreneurial programming maximizes the value of any Duke education, adding a vital layer of attitudes, skills, and career preparedness to students’ regular course of study. Through their involvement with I&E, many students discover passions, opportunities, or applications of their work they never knew about or considered.
As we look back on a year of exciting growth for our programs, we reflect too on the evolution of programs rehomed this past year in the Office of Translation & Commercialization as part of Duke’s efforts to better support Duke researchers’ commercialization efforts. We take pride in these programs’ progress to date, and we are eager to see how they will continue to help bring Duke innovations to the world.
Moving toward Duke’s second century, I&E is well positioned to help redefine entrepreneurial education and discovery in higher education. We invite you to explore our areas of focus over the past year as we have redoubled our efforts to serve Duke students:
• Scaling a distinctly Duke approach to entrepreneurial education
• Enhancing students’ regular course of study with the mindset and skillset for any future path
• Nurturing and supporting innovators and entrepreneurs dedicated to creating impact through startup ventures
• Uniting, inspiring, and providing ongoing experiential learning opportunities for Duke’s student innovator community
