Innovation is everywhere at Duke. We use our programming, storytelling, and communications channels (including a reimagined website) to tell the Duke-wide innovation and entrepreneurship story and to inspire and empower the Duke community to take advantage of the resources and opportunities that exist across schools and departments. We work to reach new audiences and invite them to join the Duke Innovation & Entrepreneurship network, where they can get the support they need.
From those with the beginnings of an idea who are curious about the path forward, to those who have worked for years on research and are ready to commercialize, Duke’s innovators receive tailored support to advance their projects. We believe that building an entrepreneurial mindset is important for everyone, not just people who want to start a company, so we look for ways to help everyone see their path forward as an innovator. From uniting Duke’s innovation community with events like I&E Fest—an opportunity fair featuring 30+ innovation-related programs and organizations—to one-on-one meetings via Innovation Navigators, I&E serves all members of the Duke community. I&E also convenes researchers from across the country, highlighting the latest advances in our understanding of innovation and entrepreneurship from a variety of different sectors.
Our communications further the work of uniting and informing Duke’s broader innovation system. By leading collaboration across a network of communicators to share Duke-wide stories, we shine a spotlight on a diverse group of exceptional Duke innovators and the pan-Duke resources helping to bring innovations to the world. In partnership with the Office of Licensing & Ventures, we host both Invented at Duke—an annual celebration that showcases some of the most exciting recent Duke innovations and inventions—and the annual pan-Duke campaign on International Women’s Day that honors some of the many leading female students, faculty, and alumnae making their mark through innovation. With an eye toward helping underrepresented groups see themselves as entrepreneurs, we also host intimate conversations with leading voices willing to candidly share their personal experiences. “Lead. Innovate. Grow: Lessons from Entrepreneurial Women,” the Duke I&E women’s conference, this year brought together successful entrepreneurial alumnae to share their stories with undergraduate, graduate, and professional women at the Bullpen for a day-long workshop; “I&E Conversations Series: Building Culture at the World’s Most Innovative Companies” connected students virtually for a casual, behind-the-scenes look at intra-preneurs. Duke I&E also partners with the American Underground, Innovate Raleigh, HQ Raleigh, NC IDEA, North Carolina State University, Research Triangle Park Foundation, and others to support The News & Observer Innovation Fellowship, which highlights key stories of innovation and entrepreneurship happening in the Triangle.
As a connector and convener in both the virtual and physical worlds, I&E meets people where they are, works to inspire them and see themselves as innovators, and helps maximize their potential by creating easy and effective pathways. Working across schools and all parts of the Duke community, we are naturally positioned to help spark connections that can take projects to the next level.
