Judd Staples is the director of new venture creation for the Duke Innovation and Entrepreneurship Initiative. Judd works with faculty, students and university partners to build and improve programs that foster innovation and enable the translation of important new discoveries into the service of society.
Judd was previously EVP Corporate Development for CancerGuide Diagnostics, a life science company focused on development and commercialization of novel molecular diagnostic assays that enable oncologists and their patients to make individualized treatment decisions. Prior to co-founding CancerGuide, Judd held the position of Entrepreneur in Residence at Duke in which he facilitated the translation of university research into practice with a particular focus on genomic medicine and molecular diagnostics. He has previous experience in evaluating new university technology based business opportunities and actively managing new venture growth as an associate at Academy Venture Funds and later as a strategy consultant with Southeast TechInventures.
Judd has 20 years of industry experience with leadership roles in business development, product development, quality assurance and operations. Mr. Staples received a BS in mechanical engineering from Duke University, an MS from Georgia Tech and an MBA from Duke’s Fuqua School of Business, where he was a Thomas Keller Scholar.
