The Duke Angel Network has appointed Winston Henderson E’90 L’96 to its steering committee. Henderson will replace Eric Toone, who has left Duke for Breakthrough Energy Ventures.

Mr. Henderson currently serves as Vice President and General Counsel at Nano Terra, Inc., a nanotechnology company in Cambridge, MA.

Mr. Henderson has more than 10 years of expertise in starting and running life-science and high-tech start-up companies in the Boston area. Prior to Nano Terra, he was General Counsel at Surface Logix, a life science company in Boston. Surface Logix invented a platform technology for developing improved drug therapies, and grew into a biopharmaceutical company with a substantial pipeline of drug candidates addressing Type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular health and oncology.

“We are thrilled to add Winston to our Duke Angel Network team,” said Kip Frey, interim director for the Duke Innovation & Entrepreneurship Initiative. “He will bring both operating expertise and a valuable network to the Duke Angel Network steering committee. We look forward to working closely with him as we continue to expand the impact of the Network.”

Prior to moving to Boston to join the start-up economy, Mr. Henderson was an attorney with an intellectual property law firm, Kenyon & Kenyon, and a consultant with Andersen Consulting (now Accenture) in its Advanced Systems and Technology Integration Services groups. During that time, Mr. Henderson consulted with and advised numerous international high technology, medical device and pharmaceutical companies, as well as various government entities, both domestic and international.

Mr. Henderson received his B.S.E. in Biomedical & Electrical Engineering from Duke University (where he was a Reginaldo Howard Scholar), and his J.D. from Duke University School of Law. Mr. Henderson is on the Board of Trustees of Boston Children’s Hospital, the Board of Directors for the Duke University Alumni Association, and the Duke Law & Entrepreneurship Advisory Board. He has exhibited a deep commitment to Duke over a span of more than two decades, with appointments and committee memberships including the Duke Greek Advisory Council, Duke Boston Regional Leadership, and DukeProceed, which formed to honor the enrollment of the first black undergraduates at Duke and helps foster relations between Duke and Durham.
