Duke alumnus and entrepreneur John Shen M.S.'96, a significant donor to the newly named John Shen Duke Startup Showcase, knows firsthand that building a company rarely follows a straight line. His own journey inspired a philanthropic commitment to helping the next generation of entrepreneurs find their footing, take smart risks, and discover what’s possible.
JOHN'S PATH to Innovating
John founded Sunstone Management in 2015 with the mission of fostering a supportive ecosystem for entrepreneurs, startups, and innovation. John’s entrepreneurial career has included successes and also setbacks, experiences he chronicled in his book, Crossing the Swamp: My Path to Innovating as a Parallel Entrepreneur. Those lessons have shaped a commitment he shares with his wife, Stella: helping the next generation of entrepreneurs turn ideas into viable ventures.
Over the years, the couple has supported university entrepreneurship programs and student venture competitions in their home state of California. For John, a Duke alumnus who has been investing in the university through philanthropy for more than a decade, supporting Duke I&E was a natural next step.
“When I learned about the Duke Startup Showcase, I recognized that investing in it is an outstanding opportunity to help strengthen a flagship program and contribute to its long-term growth,” John said.
More Than the Final Pitch
Thanks to John’s and Stella’s significant philanthropic commitment, the newly named John Shen Duke Startup Showcase is more than a pitch competition. It is a multi-month founder development experience designed to help Duke students build their ventures and themselves as entrepreneurs.
Beginning with nearly 100 student ventures, founders move through a multi-stage process that includes coaching, mentorship, investor feedback, and multiple rounds of pitching. The experience culminates in April, when a set of finalists pitch on stage before investors, alumni, mentors, and community leaders for more than $115,000 in non-dilutive funding.
For John, the value lies not only in what happens on the final pitch stage, but in giving students the support to learn, adapt, and pursue their ideas with greater confidence.

Why Duke Entrepreneurs?
John sees something distinctive in Duke students: intellectual curiosity paired with a desire to make a difference.

“Duke consistently attracts exceptionally talented students who are driven not only by intellectual curiosity but also by a genuine desire to make a positive impact on the world,” he said. “Many have the potential to build innovative, transformative companies.”
His vision for the John Shen Duke Startup Showcase also extends beyond Duke’s campus. Drawing on his own experience supporting entrepreneurs and innovation programs, John hopes to connect student founders with a wider community that can help them take their next steps.
“Beyond the Startup Showcase itself, I also hope to help create more pathways for student founders by connecting them with resources, mentors, and opportunities beyond Duke's campus that can accelerate their entrepreneurial journeys.”
For John, that is what making an investment in the Showcase is ultimately about: giving students the opportunity to test their ideas, learn from others, and see where those ideas might lead. When they take the stage in April, it marks the culmination of the Showcase, but for many, it is only the beginning.
